We all know the typical class.
The teacher said, the students listen.
When it comes to test time, the person who can remember the teacher's words most will get the highest score.
Unfortunately, according to Arshad Ahmad, McMaster's deputy attorney
Chair of teaching, although communication technology and various studies have shown a better approach, this teaching model is still widely used today.
"You still have a man standing in front of you, and the students are sitting like they are in a monastery.
"The behavior of teaching, the way knowledge is distributed, has not fundamentally changed," he said . ".
Ahmed and many other reforms
Thoughtful educators believe that learning is more important than memory.
Teaching is more important than lectures, and learning is more important than reading textbooks.
Enter classroom 127 in a building called T-
At McMaster University.
Last summer, a group of faculty and students, including Ahmed, brainstormed a classroom.
Eventually, they had a room with a projector and screen in it, used all four walls and improved the sight of the students who were usually crowded together, and the screen allowed different information to be presented at the same time.
The whiteboards on each wall are designed to provide students with tools to solve problems and generate ideas in groups.
"One of the things this generation likes to do is look at things," said Ahmed, who participated in design last summer and taught a financial lesson in the classroom.
"They are a generation.
Ahmed said he knew that the host of HBO Tonight last week, John Oliver, was popular with students.
So he added some of Oliver's rant about the global economy in class.
"The idea is to get them excited and informed about what's going on in the world.
We will discuss the situation in Greece and China.
They understand the impact of the economy on the environment, the equality of income, and we will even discuss the pressure on them to find jobs in the financial world.
"Students are encouraged to move around.
"They don't just sit in a chair and listen to the teacher.
They themselves stood up and walked around, doing things individually in groups, and they also taught.
"In Ahmed's class, students were asked to browse their own learning resources before class.
At the beginning of the course, the students complete the quiz and then, for the rest of the time, they engage in discussions and other forms of engagement in an attempt to really understand the material.
Ahmed said the jury had not yet decided on whether the classroom could improve learning.
But the early signs are positive.
He said that the students scored high in class and gave the class a very high rating.
In addition, the attendance rate of summer classes is much higher than normal, indicating that students like the experience.
