WATERLOO —
Canada's largest cinema chain is buying Waterloo's digital signage business for $3. 5 million.
Xili Entertainment Co. , Ltd.
Digital Display and communications companies are being purchased
In the deal announced on Thursday
Sales are expected to end in July 2.
Established in 1996, digital signage was designed, installed, maintained and operated in the North American retail, finance, hospitality and entertainment markets.
The company employs 24 employees in an office on McMurray Road in north Waterloo and two in Toronto.
Steve Harris
The owner of Digital said the deal was "very exciting and suitable" for the company ".
In an interview on Thursday, he said that not only will the entire staff stay at Waterloo, but the acquisition will also allow the office to add more staff.
Cineplex Entertainment, which owns or leases 130 cinemas across Canada, is looking for more expertise in the operation of the digital signage business, and digital is looking to expand its media sales and advertising components, said digital's deputy Harris.
President of Business Development.
The deal, he said, provides more resources for digital companies to look for greater opportunities.
"Before, we didn't know if we could take over the bank (as a client).
Now they (Cineplex’s)
Yes, of course we can go to the plate.
They are very respected in the room.
"Digital works with the marketing and creative department of a company to develop Digital content for big and small screens and manage everything from Waterloo's computer connected to the network.
Content can change quickly depending on audience or line traffic, thus increasing advertising revenue and marketing potential.
Digital also manages supplier selection, supervises installation and provides advertising revenue forecasts.
Key customers include Air Canada Centre, Rogers store, future store, Best Buy, CIBC, Labatt brewery, Citibank and Sun Trust, Georgia.
Harris said that about a year ago, after a casual meeting between Digital founder and president Stuart Kirkpatrick and executive vice president Dan McGrath, discussions about possible sales began
President, Cineplex Entertainment
About 10 years ago, Digital installed video walls and projection systems in the Cineplex Hall, so the two knew each other.
After lunch, it was clear that every company could help each other, Harris said.
Selling is not a tough decision, he said, because Digital retains its autonomy and doesn't have to give up too much.
"That doesn't mean half of us are out of work.
That way I wouldn't be comfortable.
"Digital doesn't have some kind of magic software code or technology that Cineplex wants," Harris said.
What Cineplex is getting, he says, is the people and brainpower behind the numbers.
Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Cineplex Entertainment, said Digital is the leader in design, implementation and maintenance services
Digital signage networks throughout North America.
"The acquisition of DDC enables us to further expand our existing Cineplex digital media business," he said in a press release . ".
