James Baechler's testimony at the Michael Ball murder trial on Tuesday was linked to the defense argument that Hewlett died of a drug overdose.
Baechler described his relationship with Hewlett as "a friend with benefits," telling court that she smoked twice as much cocaine as he did one night.
He said that Howlett often used cocaine on weekends, starting after dinner and continuing until early morning.
A gathering in the weeks leading up to her disappearance lasted "maybe two days," said Baechler, a witness summoned by the accused.

The prosecution stated that Ball had used choking to stay at howter on June 27, 2013, kneeling on her chest, and claimed that Ball and another drug dealer, Daniel Warwick, had disposed of her body.
The defense said that Hewlett died of a drug overdose and insisted that Baechler and Warwick dumped her body in June 28 using a truck owned by Baechler's friend Christopher Smith.
Smith testified that he did not know whether Baechler had used the truck in June 28.
Only Baechler has the right to use it, he said.

He testified that he often sent Howlet to the apartment in Ball, Chestnut Street, kidina.
He said that Howe would get drugs and she and Bachler would use them.
Baechler said that during the two months before her death, he and Hewlett met most weekends.
They use cocaine "almost every weekend", including at their wedding in June 15.
Defense lawyer Brennan Smart showed Baechler a text message sent by Hewlett, which is a "loose powder" that can be mixed in a drink ".
Baechler said he did not remember receiving the text and did not know what medication she was talking about.
He agreed that Smart might not be cocaine.
"Maybe it's MDMA," Baechler said . ".
At the beginning of Baechler's testimony, Smart put a photo of Howett posted on Facebook by Baechler on the court projection screen on October 2014.
The text next to the picture provides "love and prayer" for the family of Howlett, and hopes that the ball will "rot" in prison for a lifetime.
Smart asked him if the comment reflected how he felt about the ball.
Baechler said yes.
Earlier on Tuesday, Smith said he took several items from Bauer's apartment after Bauer was charged with murder.
Mr. Smith has gone abroad and cannot appear in court.
His testimony at his preliminary hearing in 2014 was recorded in court on Tuesday.
Smith used to buy drugs from Ball, who works at a property management company that is preparing Ball's apartment for a new tenant.
Smith took a vacuum cleaner, a tool box and a light.
Smith testified that Bauer's father, Jason, called him later and threatened to call the police.
Smith said he had nothing but harmony. "I gave James (Baechler)
