my name is jimi is a four-generation torres strait history on stage - whiteboard and projection screen combined
The people and stories of the Torres Strait rarely appear on the stage in Sydney.
When they do this, it is often labeled "indigenous --
The term combines very different cultures and histories and eliminates the specificity of these islands and the diversity within them.
First, 15 inhabited islands are divided into five groups;
Residents speak two languages and several dialects;
There are a large number of expatriates on the mainland.
So it is exciting that there is not one work in Belva this month, but two works created by the famous Torres Strait Islander artist: Jimmy Barney, my name is Jimmy (January 5–21)
And Ghenoa Gela is my Urrwai (
January 19-2-4).
Both are part of the Sydney Festival.
The audience in Sydney may feel like they know Jimmy Barney, and on the screen of Peter Pan, Title and Deed, Storm Boy and the Straits, Mambo is now Redfern
However, they may not know that his late father, Ahmed Dibo Barney, was the eighth chief of the wagadag on the island of mabuag
In the west of the Torres Strait, Jimmy will soon be the ninth.
They also did not know how many brothers, aunts and uncles he had, and what his mother and grandmother looked like.
My name is Jimi. we know all this.
When the Queensland theater company invited Barney to tell his story, the show began.
Because it is always inevitable that our parents, Barney and his collaborators will do so --co-
Jason Klarwein and creator and director of projection and sound designer Justin Harrison
Head to the island of Thursday to talk to Dimple Bani about his life, culture and leadership responsibility.
Sadly, this beloved accomplished man is in four
Annual development period.
This means that the structure of the performance must be changed.
The purpose of enlarging the sound is also to inherit it.
At the beginning of the night, with thunder, drums and low.
The stylish paper version of the two men wearing traditional headwear enters from the left side of the stage (dhoeri), skirt (zazi)
Wrist and ankle wrap (muk muk).
This is a good sign of how the show will combine Mabuiag with Western culture.
Later, we were taught the proper name in a clip that would bring the British anthropologist Alfred Scott Harden and his six --
A report on the examination of anthropology in the Torres Strait of Cambridge published in 1901.
Over the top of the head, a booming male voice gives instructions to listen.
On the stage, on the big screen, we zoom in the universe, zoom out to Earth, enter Australia, and then fly over the beautiful blue ocean of the Torres Strait.
Two women enter in Cherry
Red dress with tropical floral pattern.
One went to the stage to launch the straw mat, and the other sat on the stool center stage, next to some drums, next to a crew member in a suit.
At this time, Barney sneered at his drama jokes and revealed his identity as a crew member.
It turns out that the screen image is not the lens of the island, but the live feed of the camera hovering over the tiny model (
Simone Cosentini and Simone Tesorieri designed).
Bani stroll explained on the central stage that he was neither from Papua New Guinea nor from Fiji-no, Christmas Island is not near the island of Zhou Si.
He will start telling a story when he realizes that we need some family history and terminology.
The following content is not like a family tree, more like a home map, which is visually drawn on the stars on the stage screen.
Five of these numerous family members were with him: his grandmother Petharie, his mother Agnes, his brothers Conway and Richard, and his son Dmitri.
The rest of the show moves between cultural stories, oral history passed down from the dimples and his father Ephraim, and Jimmy's own memories of childhood.
A cultural story is about a female "demon" who stole a misbehaving girl and dug out her eyes.
The little puppets on the model stage are told in violent detail, and when projected onto the screen they become larger than life.
The story is terrible enough to scare any child, and you can read a version of the Torre Strait myths and legends collected and translated by Margaret Laurie.
Careful readers will notice that several images in this book were taken by Jimmy's grandfather, Ephraim Barney.
We learned that Jimi's grandfather studied linguistics in Canada and invented a new spelling system for his language, and he went to England to recover his people's artifacts (
Sadly, as seen in the 1997 documentary, after the arrival of Ephraim and pitali in Cambridge, there was a crack in the mask
Set up a cultural center,the-
Black Belt of karate.
Jimi's childhood included moments with the person, as well as profound cultural agreements on adoption, and pretend to go straight to Compton as you sneak through the lounge to buy more coquettish cookies and listen to NWA's show.
The songs occasionally prompt uncles to bring permanent embarrassment to their nephews.
Dmitri's childhood was also immersed in Mabuiag culture and shorts for smartphones and rugby leagues (
The Brisbane wild horse is the most popular team, but the Melbourne Storm is the reigning Premier League champion,
He has a backpack with thin straps and a Bluetooth speaker on his BMX.
Four generations, three languages, and a variety of cultural and theatrical traditions have had a huge impact in my name Jimi.
If that's not enough, there's one more question on the night I attended --and-answer session.
It was asked how Sydney's performances were different from those of Brisbane, Cairns and the four islands.
Barney joked that the situation in the South was "bad" and the audience was less patient.
More seriously, he explained that the balance of the show has changed.
When it is performed to an audience who understands the Torres Strait, the focus is on celebration, but with the deepening of family travel, the less people know about it, the more education the show focuses on.
It's not a bad idea to play: comedy, puppets and flashguns prove it.
It would be interesting to see how my Urrwai compares.
My name is Jimi and will be performing as part of the Sydney Arts Festival until January 21.
Caroline Wake, a lecturer in drama and performance, the article was originally published in the conversation.
