The proposed policy will regulate the kind of billboards and banners that Brihanmumbai Municipal companies can Post (BMC)
A new hoarding policy is being prepared, which will pave the way for the establishment of digital hoarding throughout the city, and regulate banners and hoarding that can be posted even on trolley tracks.
The move is seen as an effort to boost the city's revenue and refresh the city.
BMC is also working to end the huge photo of using politicians in banners and padboards.
"Once the policy is ready, the head of Civil Affairs will make a final decision," said a senior citizen official at BMC's removal of the infringement department.
The policy also needs approval from the state government.
As part of the new policy, BMC plans to set up LED screen ads instead of using flex boards that need to be changed each time an advertiser changes.
Municipal officials say the shift from flexible boards to hoarding of LED screens will have double benefits.
It can be used for advertising and display public service announcements in case of emergency.
Initially, digital billboards were only planned for highways, but civic groups are now exploring the option of building digital billboards throughout the city.
"The problem with using LED screen panels on the road is the possibility of an accident.
However, there is no such situation where the LED screen enclosure on the road can cause an accident, "the official said.
However, the official added that they were looking into all aspects before the final decision.
The hoarding policy, which has been put in place in nearly 10 years, will put other stakeholders such as railways on a platform.
Khalid Batliwala, chairman of the Mumbai hoarding Owners Association, welcomed this.
"This is an encouraging development and it will change the face of the city," Batliwala said . ".
The new policy will also regulate the size of photos that can be used in banners or padboards.
"While the policy was framed, people are considering the possibility of canceling the posting of huge pictures of politicians," the official said . ".
