As a long-
Time and former residents of Brampton City (
1967-2010)
I know exactly what's going on and-
Goodwill efforts to revitalize the city center.
However, Brampton seems to have suffered the same reason as most areas near Toronto --
It can't shake the reputation of a bedroom community with no viable downtown.
According to the city planners and business leaders I have interviewed, this seems to be about to change and they have recently taken me on a walking tour of the city.
The tour is led by Suzy Godefroy, who is the new executive director of downtown Brampton BIA;
Paul Aldunate, leader of the urban center planning group, and Anthony Wong, manager of strategy and enterprise services.
Walk up and down the Main Street and Queen Street, get in and out of the maze Lane, and head north to Warden Street
On a hot Friday afternoon, September, I did notice a lot of people walking around.
I think this is a good sign.
But I like what I hear.
The whole idea, Aldunate says, is to "urbanize the suburbs" and get Brampton into the big leagues.
I want to say, it's time.
Aldunate and his team don't see the city center as a priority, but when you plan on a new market segment, "there are 300 and 400 new homes at a time," and your attention will indeed be distracted. (
Brampton city, with a population of about 600,000, has added 3,469 new homes so far this year, making it easy to become the largest new house builder for the entire GTA.

The first is the roadway improvement project, which aims to better connect the city center's extensive network of walking routes and place flowers and beautiful landscapes in every corner and Gap.
Huang said it was part of a well-planned landscaping plan for the city center.
It is hoped that the plan will also include extensive restoration of the facade of the urban heritage building, which will be approved by the Council next year with a target of 2018 Spring buildings.
Owners and tenants are eligible for an elevation improvement grant of up to $20,000 per property in the city center, $30,000 for corner lots and $50,000 for heritage properties.
But Huang insists that there is more to it.
This is also for local residents to rediscover the city center.

"Laneway's development is still in its infancy, but BIA has begun to use these places for their special activities, such as classic cars and the latest" laneway Night "event, Lan said.
In addition, the proposal by Wendel Clark sports bar will be the "first vision outcome for more terraces inside and outside the garden square" at the intersection of Main and Queen, he added.
To be fair, however, Brampton city has done something very good.
Highlights include: the oversized LED screen is a great gathering place for movie nights and sporting events such as the Euro 2016 final;
Gage Park does bring families to the city center with music from the summer Park series and an open-air skating oval in winter;
The Rose Theater has achieved great cultural success and attracted many audiences.
Name of live performance and performance.
However, the biggest hope in the downtown area has not yet arrived.
The Riverwalk project, identified as Mayor Linda Jeffrey's top priority, is seen as a missing link to helping urban weary areas inject new life.
With it, city leaders are talking about transforming the passage of Etobicoke Creek and most of it into a pedestrian wonderland, but taking on the huge cost of such a project means that progress has been slow so far.
Mayor Jeffrey says the recent funding for research is a good start, at least to enable the city to advance the project.
"The next step is to ensure federal and provincial funding," said Aldunate, who made no secret of his enthusiasm for the project.
Huge infrastructure projects aside, it ended up in order to get people to the city center, which was not lost on BIA's new director, Godefry.
From food to people in the city center.
The composition and diversity of the city is one of the city's largest assets, she said, because residents can now enjoy Indian, Italian, Latin and Mexican cuisine, to name just a few.
Godefry believes that the recent influx of new restaurants has ignited the spark of bringing people back to the city center, which is also a steady stream of events --

The restaurant owners and retailers I interviewed also seem to be on board.

In fact, their start was to sit in a simple booth at the very successful farmer's market in the city center and then open up a full restaurant location.
"I was really pushed to this point," admits Eddie Bakur, owner and operator of La Catrina, which supplies exotic Mexican food.
But the business was good and his new restaurant benefited from its main restaurant.
Location, he said.
Slavica Bodiroga also offers a similar story, where she and her sister recently opened up the Queen of the Gypsy in the main saint.
She told me she wanted to bring a "Bloor Street Village-
Type of atmosphere to the city center.
Deborah Kenny of Kenny jewellery said last Thursday that one of the missing ingredients in all of this is retail, but it could also change.
On the 22nd, Kenny and other merchants held the "overnight in the driveway" event in the roadway and parking lot near their store, which included entertainment, food and live music.
Downtown attractions like farmers' markets, LED screens and new restaurants do help people get back to the city center, work at a store in the city center from 1987 to 1995, and then return to the storefront jewelry business in 2012, Kenny said.
"It really seems to be getting better," she said . ".
