Chatham-the new remote transport and pedestrian safety planning committee of the autonomous city, chaired by MP Jim colander, has an extensive agenda to provide "convenience, safety and friendliness" for pedestrians and drivers
In its most recent report, the Commission provided various methods to educate the public about safe driving habits while implementing existing traffic rules.
The report also lists engineering issues related to roads and sidewalks and provides assessments and suggestions.
Collander pointed out that a large number of accidents occurred due to the driver's distraction, and the culprit was the use of mobile phones and text messages.
From 2010 to 2012, 952 vehicle accidents occurred in the autonomous city.
Among them, distracted driving was "one cause" in 438 car accidents, accounting for 46% of all accidents.
Distracted driving is both a local problem and a national problem, Collander said.
In an effort to reduce distracted driving accidents, autonomous city officials have called for greater enforcement.
The autonomous city council may pass a resolution urging the State Council to increase penalties for driving vehicles while texting or calling.
The autonomous city will also try to increase its police presence on the main streets, he said.
The municipality will also continue to support the education of pedestrian safety and transportation programs, such as lectures on distracted driving to high school students, and lectures on pedestrian crossings and pedestrian safety with primary and secondary school students.
Collander and other council members stressed that traffic safety education should be the result of joint efforts by autonomous city and township officials, traffic safety officials and school districts and parents
Leading organizations, such as safety routes to schools.
In the past 10 years, the municipality has spent about $800,000 to repair and install new sidewalks.
The municipality allocates funds each year for sidewalk maintenance and maintenance projects as capital expenditures.
In recent years, the autonomous city has installed sidewalks on Watchung and lower Elmwood Boulevard as a response to the community's request to ensure safe walking and cycling to school.
At present, several regulations provide for sidewalk maintenance and snow removal and outdoor dining in the business district.
The committee recommends the consolidation of all sidewalk regulations into one.
The municipality has installed new signs to guide drivers to parking lots and other frequently visited locations.
This year, a new electric crosswalk signal will be set at the intersection of the main street and Coleman Avenue.
The existing intersection signal will be transferred to the underground passage of the Fairmont Avenue Railway, which is considered a dark, often dangerous intersection.
Police will continue to place electronic message boards on some streets that are often speeding.
The autonomous city also intends to add one more
Parking limit for one and a half hours on the street.
