Three years ago, nearly 50 children may have been exposed to asbestos during the renovation of a school in Adelaide.
Education Minister Jennifer Longken told parliament today that on December 2009, 47 children and four teachers were present when the interactive whiteboard was installed in two classrooms in an out-of-town school.
At the end of 2010, asbestos was found on the walls when further rollover was imminent.
Rankine MS did not name the school.
The risk of exposure was "considered low", she said, but she asked the parents of the school to find a health professional.
Rankin said a letter was being written to the parents of the students and the principal would call the affected family. MS.
"I know it's going to be painful for parents to receive this information, and my priority right now is to make sure they get the information and advice they need," she said . ".
An opposition education spokesman questioned why it took the minister so long to inform parents.
"Telling parents four years after the incident is not the right thing (to do)," he said.
"The minister must immediately explain why it took four years and guarantee that no other school is in the same situation," he said . ".
