Next month, when RapidPenang introduces an electronic surveillance board on the island, bus commuters will be able to learn about the operation of the bus in real time.
A total of 32 such committees have been put into trial operation at several bus stations and the system will be fully operational in September.
"These boards have an electronic monitoring system that displays commuters in real time when the bus arrives.
"This is a more advanced system than the electronic board at the Komtar, Bukit Jambul and The Weld Quay bus terminal, which only shows the expected arrival time (ETA)
A source said.
The source added that the trial run started a month ago and was running very smoothly as the bus arrived "on time", but it was reported that some hiccups had occurred and rectification was under way.
"The monitoring system will also be installed for 400 rapid Penang buses.
"The electronic board of the mainland bus station will be installed at a later stage.
"Rapid Penang first installed the intelligent commuter information system (ICIS)in 2008.
Under the monitoring system, the headquarters will know when the bus stops driving, deviates from the route, or whether the driver is speeding.
Every stage car in Penang is equipped with a GPS transmitter that tells the rapid Penang bus headquarters every 15 seconds.
Commuters using a smartphone can download the journey planning app for RapidPenang, which will show the arrival and departure times of the bus.
