A painting in England
The Australian-born artist, Tom Roberts, disappeared in 136 and was found to be an original work, at the host-a husband and wife-though they don't know it's a Fake or Fortune show from the fake BBC.
Former mayor of the Queensland Sunshine Coast, Joe Natoli, purchased the 1883 oil painting called "rejected" from the online auction site on 2013, although it was listed as a fake.
The painting was signed by Tom Roberts, who is considered the founder of the Australian Impressionist, but there is no other indication that it is original.
It depicts a person in the studio and seems to have nothing in common with his most famous outdoor landscape work.
But Mr Natori decided to take the risk.
"I asked myself, 'Why would someone try to copy something instead of making it look like a typical Tom Roberts?
He told ABC News.
Both Mr. Natoli and his wife were passionate about art and ended up paying £ 9,000 for the painting, but soon after studying the painting and composition, he became an expert,
When the couple suffered a business crash and lost their home, a friend suggested they go to the BBCartdetective project to investigate the source of the painting.
The programme undertook this task-the first attempt to certify Australian works --
And confirm that the address on the back of the painting is consistent with the location of a London house where Roberts lived between 1883 and 1884.
The artist moved from Dorchester to Australia in 1869, about 13 years old, was the first Australian to be admitted to the Royal College of Art in London and studied there from 1881 to 1884.
Other evidence suggests that the painting is true.
A handwriting expert compared the signature of the painting with the work from 1883 to 1888, concluding that the "likely" signature was Roberts.
The painting is similar to the painting in the sketchbook of the artist at that time.
In the end, Mary Eagle, anassendonian, and Roberts experts at the Art Gallery in New South Wales checked the painting and assessed that it was true, although she thought the part was not well painted.
Artist's masterpiece Lisa Roberts
The granddaughter said she had no doubt that the job was an early self. portrait.
"I know his art grew up in the house here and he works around his photos," she told the ferfax media . ".
"Until I see the meat of the painting, see the making of the mark, the way the strokes are placed, and the composition and combination of the whole, what I understand is Tom's early life and early experience in the UK . . . . . . Make me believe this old canvas makes sense.
"Mr Natoli has put the painting on sale, noting that a similar but smaller Roberts work was sold for £ 430,000.
It is expected to range from 300,000 to 600,000.
"I think every collector likes to think they can find something more valuable than what was originally sold," he said . ".
