The FBI paid Best Buy Geek team employees as informants to Mark indecent materials when people brought computers to repair them.
This is based on a document published to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital civil liberties organization that has filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit seeking records that may show that people's equipment is being carried out
EFF filed a complaint last year after the FBI's interaction with Geek Squad technicians appeared in the case of Mark retemer, Orange County, California.

The records now released to EFF further reveal the relationship between Best Buy and the FBI.
These documents show a series of interactions: the FBI paid $500 to the Geek Squad staff, a meeting of the agency's network working group at the computer repair facility at Best Buy, Kentucky, in some investigations, after discovering suspicious child pornography, the Geek Squad staff called the FBI's field office in the city of Wisconsin.
A key question is whether Best Buy employees are "fishing" in their customers' devices to help the FBI ".
This is what Rettenmaier's lawyer, James Riddet, said when searching for the "unallocated space" of the Rettenmaier computer, a Geek Squad technician, did, there, he found an image used to persuade the judge to issue a search warrant for his home.
"Their relationship is so comfortable and so extensive that Best Buy's search becomes a government search," Riddet told The Washington Post last year . ".

An extensive search of the customer's equipment indicates that officials are aware of the search and instruct informants to do the search.
The payments received by the Geek Squad informants also indicate that they conducted a search to help the FBI.
Best Buy said it "did not seek or receive training from law enforcement on how to search for child pornography" and "doubled its efforts to train employees what to do --and not do —

"The company stated that three of the four employees allegedly paid from the FBI for handing over child pornography were no longer in the company and the fourth employee was condemned and redistributed.
"Any decision to accept payment is a very bad judgment, inconsistent with our training and policy," it said in a statement to NPR.
The FBI will not comment on the matter on the grounds of ongoing litigation.
