A graduate student at the University of Calgary studying Transportation Engineering said that slowing down traffic on deer foot trails during peak hours can actually speed up.
Karan Arora spoke at the opening ceremony in Calgary on Tuesday about the benefits of variable speed limits.
The DeerfootTrail study aims to change the speed limit by means of digital signs to make busy Calgary roads safer and less congested
According to road, traffic and weather conditions,
Arora says a system has been set up on the roads in Germany and Washington state.
By allowing drivers to drive at slower but more consistent speeds, it is possible to reduce parking and driving traffic and increase overall speed for everyone.
"The main goal is to increase traffic and reduce travel time," Arora said . " He has been using different models to study the impact of this speed limit on Calgary roads.
There are two states of traffic: either crowded or not, larora said.
"The crowded state is very sensitive and any small interference in the flow, such as a sudden change in the lane of a particular vehicle, triggers parking and driving conditions," he said . ".
Arora says slowing down drivers on deerfoot Trail can prevent this congestion when traffic is heavy.
"During peak hours, the speed will be below 100 km/h, and in off-peak times, the speed will reach the maximum again," he said . ".
"Even off-sitepeak hours [there are]
In the event of a traffic accident, the variable speed limit will take effect again to ensure smooth traffic.
Calgary's oldest and busiest freewayArora says the introduction of variable speed limit signs will only require a fraction of the price of adding more lanes to DeerfootTrail to solve congestion problems.
Arorasaid, variable speed limit is just an idea that the College of Engineering is working on to improve traffic conditions.
Calgary city and Alberta transport are currently working together on the dilford trail, Calgary's oldest highway, the busiest highway in Alberta.
Suggestions on short selling
According to the city's website, long-term improvements in security and mobility are expected to be shared in early 2017
Proposals for tenure available by the end of 2018.
