Underwater archaeologists at Canadian Parks returned to the Arctic Thursday with their diving equipment, hoping to reach out and touch the wreckage of the Franklin expedition ship before the ice enters.
Two ships of the captain
Sir John Franklin disappeared in order to find the Northwest Passage.
They were trapped in the ice in 1846 and are likely to sink in 1848.
The legend of Inuit is that the mast sticks out on the ice.
Sometime last week
To avoid providing clues to the location of the site, the searcher will not say when --
Sonar found the crystal.
In the Victoria Strait, the hull of a ship is clearly visible in 11 metres of water.
Prime Minister Harper announced the discovery on Tuesday.
Before the end of the summer, the diverse people wanted to answer some pressing questions, which hindered further exploration: is this ship Erebus? Or almost the same terrorist item will tell the story of the affected crew and how they plan their future exploration of wreck and they may find the bodies of some members --
Maybe even Franklin himself.
Archaeologist Marc-"If there is a chance, we will dive on the spot.
Andrea Bernier told reporters at a press conference in Ottawa on Wednesday.
"Obviously, the window is about to close this year;
We don't have much time.
"The team will collect artifacts around the site, such as wood that appears to come from rigging, and evaluate their type and condition.
They also want to install a camera inside the hull.
"I was always asked what would happen after archaeological discoveries.
The real archaeological work has begun.
That's what we do.
This is our 50 th anniversary. Park Hotel Canada)
This is a great gift for underwater archaeology.
They will also make plans for next year, as the Arctic expedition is a complex task and the weather will only give them a short chance.
Some time in August and September
Great work.
If the body is on board, there is a firm "handover" policy where the body is found.
Asked if Park Canada would raise the ship, Bernier did not deny the possibility, but said it would be very difficult and expensive.
Parks in Canada generally prefer to leave the remains in place to give them a proper historical background.
And Bernier and his team sent out a remote control.
He pointed out on Sunday night, "We didn't take that many images because of it (the sea)
Very flexible.
Still, he said, "You can't describe how it feels to find like this when you actually see the video.
"It's bigger than finding the Titanic . "
Bill Noon of the Canadian Coast Guard, who took part in a press conference from the Arctic by satellite phone.
They have learned a lot about the surviving features of the ship.
Archaeologist Ryan Harris says the item on the deck is a winch (
Anchor with winch)
, Front hatch, front pump head (
Pump for taking water out of container)
Deck beams and oblique deck planks used by the Royal Navy on Erebus and termirror.
The wreck is in a "perfect state of preservation", he said ".
"Deputy Andre prefondin.
The chairman of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the searcher discovered this spectacular discovery.
The association is a partner in the search field.
The rest is "record the hard work of the wreck, make sure they capture everything around the wreck and catalog everything.
It will really happen from now until the end of the season, "he said.
"They will be there for a long time.
"The biggest question is: are the remains of the original members of the expedition on board ? " The oral history of the Inuit shows that they are, and the wreck is where the Inuit say it.
"It is reported that the Inuit were on board (
When the ship is trapped in the ice and abandoned)
"In fact, he saw the body on his hips and then got off the bus very quickly," he said . ".
"The first thing is to try to identify the wreck," he said . ".
"If it's Erebus, it's the flagship, is it terror or Erebus.
Even Franklin's remains may be on board.
Both ships are more than 30 metres long.
Death is a little bigger.
But there are subtle differences, such as the weight of their anchors, and the fact that Erebus has a unique gap in her gunwale.
"They built the grid around the wreck and recorded each reference point in the grid.
This is a temple within the scope, "said prefondin. (
These are not just conceptual grids.
Divers will lay a square frame under the sea like a huge board. )
"They have a blueprint for the ship (and)
It should be able to infer quite quickly which of the two it is.
"If cold water holds the contents of the ship, there may be canned food (
Test lead;
History shows that lead
The contaminated canned food killed these people)
Charts, even books.
"That morning, when the wreck was found, the Merciful Lord was smiling at them," said prefondin, because the scene was shallow --
Only 11 metres.
Make diving easier.
But it's not too easy either: it's September and ice will end this month.
Suddenly, the story of the Inuit was re-staged.
"Oral tradition is one of these two areas," while the other ship is said to be further north, where the crew abandoned the ship.
"This year's search in the northern region is the worst in years," said prefondin . ".
This is not a complete loss. Thetorpedo-
The powerful sonar underwater drone sweeps back and forth, drawing many square kilometers of undersea maps, narrowing down where the remaining remains may be hidden.
He said there was "discussion" about the return next year ".
"At the moment of excitement, we talked to our partners . . . . . . We all said, 'Hey, we'll be back next year.
"A win has already attracted the interest of private partners who will do more.
"This is no longer a crazy dream.
We will see them if they are there, which has become very real.
"The sonar is very clear and powerful," he said.
"If you put your phone in 300 feet of the water, that thing will see its bottom as clearly as anything else.
"It can" see "the bottom in more detail than the Sonar shown in Ottawa this week.
"They want to know what happened in the last few months, weeks and days.
"The level of material preservation there makes us very optimistic and we will find a lot of information and evidence about what happened.
The status of equipment, equipment, the rest of the food . . . . . . "If the crew is found, they are the Royal Navy sailors and the United States Navy. K.
The government will be involved because the site will become an underwater cemetery.
"What happened during the last time people were on board" the miracle of Prefontaine.
"Very little is known about this.
I know Mark-
Andre and Ryan, if there's something in there to answer the question, they'll find it.
