ROCHESTER, N. Y. —
Rangos Omnimax theater at Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh is a movie screen monster.
Dome screen is one of the largest screens in the country.
A theater of 7,200 square meters is about 340 square feet.
In contrast, the maximum size of a typical multi-screen movie screen is approximately 2,700 square feet.
When it shows short documentaries such as the great white shark and Jerusalem every day, the museum will show them on the IMAX movie projector.
But with the disappearance of IMAX Video Hollywood films, Canadian film technology company IMAX Corp.
A new laser device is coming soon.
Projection based system
A large part of it was developed by former Eastman Kodak.
Brain working at Eastman Business Park in Rochester, NYY.
"Our goal is not simply to replace movies with numbers. . .
But do your best to go beyond the quality of the film, "said Brian J.
Bonnick, chief technology officer, IMAX.
The connection of IMAX/Kodak was as early as October 2011, when IMAX signed a license agreement granting it exclusive rights to more than 50 Kodak laser projection technology patents.
IMAX also employs about 30 Kodak scientists and engineers who are now working at the Rochester R & D center in Rochester.
"Many of them are in (roughly 50)
"Patents," bonnik said.
"I think it's much easier to hire people who grow up with this technology. . .
Instead of hiring new engineers and scientists, they have to read through intellectual property and find out what is not recorded. It gave (IMAX)
A better start.
"In addition to picking up Kodak employees, IMAX also purchased a variety of equipment from Kodak and set up space for them in building 82 of Eastman Commercial Park, kodak's own research and development laboratory is a building in building 83.
They looked at what Bonnick said about the optical part, basically creating a whole new way of film screening from scratch with a laser instead of a xenon lamp.
From increasing color saturation to improving image fidelity and resolution, the advantages of laser are very large, he said.
"You can see billions of colors, but the TV screens and projectors can't project billions of colors," Bonnick said . ".
The laser allows us to project more colors.
The Ruby is really red.
The fluorescent color in Avatar has almost a fluorescent appearance for them.
"With the laser, we have a solution that can satisfy or exceed the IMAX movie," he said . ".
Various other film screening companies, he said, are "using lasers very well, but mainly to improve the brightness . ".
"There's a lot more you can do.
"Instead of trying to shoot the laser into where the xenon bulb is, we designed the project from scratch," he said.
Engineers and scientists like challenges.
This is certainly the case.
"According to IMAX, the first film to be shown on its laser projector will be The Hobbit: Battle of the five, which will be released on December. 17.
Bonnik said the theater, which will be transformed into a laser version, has not yet been decided.
So far, IMAX has signed 67 agreements around the world, and will install laser projectors in Hollywood's iconic TCL China Theater, Manhattan AMC Loews Lincoln Square and other places on 2015, three IMAX locations in London's Imperial Leicester Square and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
Rossilynne Culgan, a spokeswoman for the Carnegie Science Center Theater in Pittsburgh, said it "is definitely considering the option to upgrade the digital theater in the near future.
"At this point, we are exploring a lot of options and the laser technology system is one of them," she said . ".
Bonnick said that the IMAX laser projector system is designed for the company's large screen site of 80 feet M and higher, and it is difficult to work properly even with Xenon lighting due to screen size.
"In order to seek a business solution, your standard diversity venue, I don't think the cost of laser is needed to come up with a viable business model today," he said.
"I see this happening in the next few years.
The business model of the big screen market is very different.
"We have a core design that we can modify to become a product (Standard screen)marketplace.
We will bring it up when the market is ready to accept it.
