A £ 265 project has been completed, upgrading part of the M6 to a smart highway between Crewe and Knutsford.
The England highway says a fourth lane has been built in each direction with new signage, traffic sensors and CCTV cameras to help solve congestion problems with its 120,000 drivers each day.
The intelligent highway can achieve variable speed limit, thus shortening the journey time.
The British highway said it was "the largest M6 upgrade since it was opened in Cheshire about 60 years ago ".
Upgrade on 19-
The British highway says the mile extension is the first of four smart highway plans, which will add the m6's capacity to a third on a 60-mile highway between Coventry and Wigan
Chief executive Jim O'Sullivan said: "Every day thousands of drivers travel between Crewe and Knutford on M6, making it one of the busiest highways in the country, as a result, additional lanes and new technologies will help M6 adapt to the future.
"The new elevated electronic logo will provide drivers with real-time information about their journey, including speed limit changes, lane closures, and events on the road.
Traffic sensors on one side of the highway will also be used to automatically set variable speed limits to keep traffic moving.
"Other improvements made as part of the plan include low
Noise road surface, install new concrete safety barrier to reduce the risk of vehicles passing through the opposite lane in the collision, and install a barrier of 700 to reduce noise levels for people living near the highway.
