SEATTLE (Reuters)-
Microsoft the Company (Microsoft Corp . ) thursday said it would launch one of its most popular apps, which allows people to take photos of documents and turn them into editable files, Apple's iPhone and Google's Android.
The app, called Office Lens, has been launched on phones running Windows, but given Windows's small share of the smartphone market, it's barely exposed.
Bringing the app to iOS and Android is the latest sign of Microsoft's new strategy, which will install the best software on as many devices as possible, regardless of whether they run Windows or not.
Office Lens essentially turns the phone into a scanner, for example, using a camera to take a photo of a menu, receipt, or business card and crop the image immediately and store it in Microsoft's OneNote notes --
Get the app or the OneDrive cloud storage app.
As of Thursday, the app can be downloaded free of charge on iOS and Android phones, images can be saved as Word files, PowerPoint presentations, or PDF files, and with optical character recognition technology, implement Retrieval and Editing of text.
