On Tuesday night, company leaders Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer briefed the new product at the All Things D technology conference.
The new operating system is expected to be available in early 2010.
Microsoft wants Windows 7 to respond better, because Windows Vista, while largely shunned by businesses, still sells 0. 15 billion units.
The new fingertip interface will start on Apple's iconic iPhone, allowing users to zoom in and out photos, track routes on maps, draw pictures, switch documents, and select apps.
"The way you interact with the system will change dramatically," Microsoft chairman Gates said . ".
"Almost every interaction today is a keyboard-mouse.

But Mr. Ballmer denied that the company was following Apple's footsteps, saying the two were operating in different alliances.
"We will sell 0. 29 billion computers, and Apple will sell 10 million," he said . ".
"They are very successful, and so are we and our partners.

In July 1, Gates officially demoted at Microsoft. He said he supported Chief executive Ballmer, who has invested $47. 5-
Billions to buy Yahoo.
"I have always supported everything Steve did," Gates said . ".
"Full support.
Ballmer revealed that Microsoft is still negotiating a partnership with Yahoo to compete with Google for Internet advertising. But he insists the company will not overpay the portal.
"You see, we bid to buy Yahoo.
It has been around for three months and there is a difference between the bid and the bid, "he said.
"We think we can speed up our business.
