The first images played from the huge screen on Tuesday night included a digital film that included mountains, birds, skyscrapers and bursts of color that accompanied the music soundtrack.
The group, located on the side of a hotel, is 8 stories high and aims to broadcast similar ads to dozens of other screens at the bustling New York crossroads.
Hundreds of tourists braved the cold temperatures to see the screen come to life, taking photos of digital billboards across city blocks.
