For the first time since 2008, a major monitoring technology upgrade has defined digital cameras being promoted on Melbourne's rail network to help police combat criminal acts.
Now, the station has more than 2300 digital CCTV cameras, replacing outdated models that produce "granular" lenses.
The launch of the camera began in 2016, but the last upgrade of the system was in 2008.
Public Transport Minister Melissa Horn declined to disclose the price of the new camera, saying it was part of a contract with the Metro train.
She said the cameras will make it easier for police to quickly obtain security footage taken at the train station.
"We all have the right to feel safe at railway stations and public transport-these upgrades will provide a clearer vision to stop potential criminals and ultimately create a safer train network for everyone, MS Horn said.
Jeroen Weimar, chief executive of Victoria Public Transport, told reporters that most of the cameras can be accessed from the central control room and the data will be recorded digitally so that the police can make it easier
The new camera, he said, was after six o'clock P. M. , outside the protection service staff and 100 tour staff at each metropolitan station.
"We have seen an increase in the satisfaction of our passengers with safety and security over the past few years," he said . ".
When asked about the faulty state escalator at South Cross station, Horne MS said she was "very disappointed" that the operator at the station had spent such a long time correcting the fault ".
"Our passengers deserve better service," she said . "
The failure of the escalator caused serious congestion at the South Cross station, where passengers grew rapidly.
MS Horn said she understood that the station operator Civic Nexus is now working with the Victoria Public Transport Department to resolve the issue.
Weimar said he was disappointed that he was still studying faults at the South crossing.
He said one of the escalators will be fixed on Monday and the other will be fixed in two weeks.
"We are having a full and frank business conversation with Civic Nexus today to ensure that all their attention is focused on this and we will take advantage of the contractual leverage you expect us to apply.
