A dazzling expanse of the night sky in central Idaho has become the first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in the United States.

Researchers say 80 of North Americans live in areas where light pollution has blurred the night sky.

But officials say it will take decades to get the rarest prize from the reserve, including efforts by the marginal community of the Reserve to reduce night lighting.
The association studied what the surrounding community did to protect the dark core area of the proposed protected area.
Volunteers also carried out night light readings throughout the region, and the environmental organization Idaho Conservation Union supported the designation to limit light pollution.
Stanley is a small mountain town in the jagged entertainment district on the north side of the reserve, operating mainly on tourism funds and supporting the reserve by voluntarily limiting outdoor lighting.
