Lost in Boston?
Don't blame it on old Bull Road.
The chaotic nature of the Boston voyage is usually attributed to the winding streets

Another reason why Boston is so mysterious about driving, cycling, or walking may have been identified: the street lacks north, south, east, west directions.
Seth Kadish wrote on his blog: "If you navigate with the sun like me, you may appreciate the cities that are planned with grid streets that are oriented in basic directions ,", last week's visual statistics.
"If you know your destination is West, you can get there even if you reach a dead end or two.
"Kadish came up with a series of charts to assess compliance in 12 different cities with the familiar Northsouth-east-West.
Each looks a bit like a star and the bar radiates outward at different angles.
The length of each bar corresponds to the number of city streets facing that direction on the compass.

The Western grid like Denver and Chicago eventually looks like a neat plus-sign.

Honolulu, without any grid structure, looks like an uneven starburst.
"The smallest geographic area of the Charlotte and Honolulu power grids is completely overwhelmed by the winding roads in the suburbs," Kadish wrote . ".
But it turns out that Boston is somewhere in the middle.

But usually they are not consistent with the North. south-east-West.
Many streets, including those in grid format, actually point to the northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast. (

"There are some gridded streets in downtown Boston, but the grid arrangement in the suburbs is different, weakening the expression of a single grid on the rose map," Kadish said . ".
Why is it difficult for residents and tourists to figure out where they are going?
People tend to think from four basic directions: turn left from the street on northbound, you know you're going west --
Or at least, West. ish.
But when the grid is not laid out in flush with the basic direction, if you don't have the mental imprint of the city streets, it's hard to know "the West --
