The screen on a smartphone or tablet is almost certainly made of a special glass called Gorilla Glass.
Corning, the leading glass maker, launched the second generation Gorilla glass at this week's International Consumer Electronics Show.
Corning said it had registered Gorilla Glass 2 and the new version had a glass thickness of 20%, but was as tough as its predecessor.
David Loeber, business director at Corning, said reducing the thickness of glass allows manufacturers to make some modifications to their devices, such as creating more space for larger batteries and improving touch sensitivity.
This year, Gorilla Glass 2 will launch on smartphones, tablets and laptops including Lenovo and HP.
