Usually I don't make a new year's decision, but for 2018, I have solemnly decided to change ten things.

I am a much loved columnist for The Financial Times, and for 32 years I have lived a happy working life and written something I like.
Now 58 years old, I am an internship math teacher at the mosburn Community College, a strict Comprehensive School in Hackney, east London.
I'm also a colleague.
The founder of a charity called Now Teach, aims to encourage other people with successful careers to join the world's most noble profession: teaching.
My life was completely subverted.
People always ask what it feels like.

I am not prepared for a large number of applications.
Within 24 hours of writing my plan, 20,000 people visited the Now Teach website and more than 100 applications arrived.

I don't mind this structure.
I loved the comforting way my days were ruled by bells like children.
I don't mind being smaller than you either. I relish it.
I once had a respectable title.
But there is an easy way at the bottom of the pile.
I am only responsible for my study.
As an internship teacher, I have about £ 20,000 so I am putting in savings, but not as much as I thought because I have hardly spent any money --
I don't have time to shop.
The problem is not my age.
I didn't feel for a second that I didn't have the energy to get into a new career.
It is tiring for everyone, but the people most affected by it are not in their 50 s, but teachers who have children at home.
If the children think it is unusual to be taught by white-haired people, they will not say so.
It doesn't matter how old my young colleague is.
We worked happily together and joked together so much that I started telling myself that they didn't even notice that I was 30 years older than them.
Until one of them said I reminded her of her grandmother and brought me back to reality.
The hardest and best: the teaching itself.
I used to be pretty good at my job, but now I'm fine at best and frustrated at worst.
It turns out that teaching is a difficult, highly skilled job and I am naturally weak because I am new to it.
If I were an intern cardiac surgeon, I would also be bad after my first semester.
I think that's what I think, because teaching is done in the family, so I'm natural.
